Results of the 21st Annual Skid mark Open Golf Tournament

It was a perfect day for golf – bright, sunny and about 75 degrees.

The competition, on the other hand, was sizzling.  Four teams competed for the Crainesbury Tournament title.  In what appears to be an annual occurrence, the final outcome was not determined until a tie-breaker was utilized.

Darren Verdegaal’s team with Mike Whitney, Leslie Sorensen,  Glenda Whitney, and Sue Crawford totaled 47 strokes     (-26) and  emerged as the winners as they registered a net eagle on the #1 Handicap hole, Number 3.  Clay Whitney’s team with David Pasquini, Anita Hunt, Maureen Whitney, and Greg MacDonald also scored 47 (- 26) but recorded a par 4 on the tie-breaker hole. For their efforts, the members of Team Verdegaal each received a sleeve of new golf balls.

On the opposite side of the competition, Bob Craine’s  fab five which included Charla Godfrey, Lynn MacDonald, Lori Verdegaal, and Jim Crawford came within just inches (of  that damn string) of joining the frontrunners!  Team Craine scored 50 (- 23) to bring up the rear and for all their hard work, were awarded the prestigious and always collectible Skidmark “We Got Screwed” trophies.

Rules for the day included the “Ladie’s Tee Rule” and the use of string to make missed putts. Each team received five feet of string.

Claiming the Long Drive and Close-to-the-Hole prizes (sleeves of new balls) were:

Men’s Long Drive – Clay Whitney          Women’s Long Drive – Leslie Sorensen

Men’s CTTH – Bob Craine                          Women’s CTTH – Maureen Whitney

A wonderful banquet at the Double LL Steakhouse was enjoyed by all the participants. It’s amazing how much beef, ribs, chicken, and shrimp is consumed by a group of 18 starving golfers.  The alcoholic intake was of some concern!!!  The Double LL’s Long Island Iced Teas are to die for!!!

Final Tournament Results:

1st:  Darren Verdegaal, Mike Whitney, Leslie Sorensen, Glenda Whitney, Sue Crawford

2nd: Clay Whitney, David Pasquini, Anita Hunt, Maureen Whitney, Greg MacDonald

3rd: Drew Sorensen, Roger Hunt, Jeannie Craine, Vickie Lane

4th: Bob Craine, Lori Verdegaal, Charla Godfrey, Lynn MacDonald, Jim Crawford

October 29, 2011

Another Skidmark barnburner is in the record books.  Five teams competed on a beautiful day for the rights to claim the Skidmark Golf Tournament Championship.  When the dust had cleared (literally), three strokes separated the Champions from the GCMIGT* Trophy recipients!

Grabbing the Championship awards were Leslie Sorensen, Sue Crawford, Bob Williams, and Clay Whitney. They combined their golf skills to register a score of 47 (26 under par)! For their efforts, each player received a sleeve of new golf balls and hearty congratulations from the other participants.

In the “we missed two short putts”, but “we don’t get the trophies” category:

2nd Place with a score of 48 was Jeannie Craine, Glenda Whitney, Roger Hunt, and Dave Rodriguez.

There was a tie for 3rd Place.  The teams of Charla Godfrey, Natalie Gulbis, Mike Whitney, and Bob Craine  - and – Kim Rodriguez, Vickie Lane, Drew Sorensen, and Jim Crawford finished at 24 under par.

Receiving the coveted Skidmark “We Got Screwed” trophies were Anita Hunt, Shari Williams, Garrett Whitney, and Steve Lane.  Once again, they were only three strokes off the lead but, remember, “close” only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades!

Congratulations – and display those trophies proudly.

Garnering the Peripheral Golf Skills Awards (also a sleeve of new golf balls) were:

Clay Whitney and Jeannie Craine with “Closest-to-the-Hole” honors on hole #5 and Leslie Sorensen and Bob Craine for blasting the Longest drives on hole #15.

All nineteen golfers enjoyed the day of competition and socialization. There was, also, a small amount of alcoholic intake!

Topping off a great day was a wonderful “group” meal at the Orange Blossom Restaurant.

Good friends, good food, good fun  --- what could better??
